Marine secrets at Kovalam

Kovalam (Chennai) is a natural beach cove formation (hence the name Kovalam) on the east coast of India. Primarily a fishing village, Kovalam had many unexplored reefs in the region which results in diverse bycatch, which made this a favorite sample collection spot for the Zoological Survey of India ( Marine biology division). Being right next to the Muttukadu Brackish water ecosystem makes it unmatched in terms of the 2 diverse ecosystems one can observe and study right in the same place.

Mangroves of Pichavaram

Pichavaram is a village near Chidambaram in Cuddalore District of Tamilnadu located between the Vellar estuary in the north and Coleroon estuary in the south. . Pichavaram consists of a number of islands interspersing a vast expanse of water covered with mangrove forest. It is one of the largest mangrove forests in India Tamil Nadu. Home to numerous species of birds and other interesting animals like Otters. Mangroves gave a wake up call to humanity during Tsunami 2004.
